Overview of Getting to Know God and His Word 12-lesson class:
Lesson 1: As It Was in the Beginning
By definition, a conversation involves at least two participants. Here you are learning about talking to and listening to God Himself, just the two of you. Perhaps you have spoken to God quite a bit, telling Him your troubles and asking for His help. Many are adept at this part of the conversation. The challenge comes when it is time to listen to Him speak or answer you. The great news is that He is always available and yearns to hear from you, to converse with you. Early in his walk with God, Dr. Goll knelt and prayed a beautiful, heartfelt prayer in which he asked God to enroll him in the School of The Spirit to be able to learn to discern the Voice of the Lord. You will find this powerful prayer in Lesson One, along with other essential treasures of spiritual understanding.
Lesson 2: The Holy Spirit at Work Today
Within every believer, a member of the Godhead, Holy Spirit resides. How fascinating! How thrilling! You are not alone, ever! Not only has Jesus declared, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." He also sent Holy Spirit to dwell inside you as His very own temple. Who is this intimate, powerful person of the Trinity? He is your Guide, Friend, Partner, Counselor, and much more. There really is no limit to who Holy Spirit can be in your life and what He can do. Lesson Two is an open door leading you to greater knowledge and understanding of this mighty relationship waiting for you to activate in your life.
Lesson 3: The Sound of Many Rushing Waters
Did you know that sometimes God may surprise you in the way He chooses to speak to you? It has been said that His voice can be like a radio, today on this channel, but another time on a different one. Then there are times when His voice is a quiet, internal 'knowing' within you. He will make Himself heard even over the noise of rushing water and the distractions of the day. This lesson will provide scriptures detailing many ways the Lord's people and His prophets heard His voice. Have you ever had a phone call with no one speaking at the other end? Did it occur to you that the Lord might be calling? Be encouraged as you study lesson three to learn there is no end to His creativity in communicating with you.
Lesson 4: Walking in Our Kingdom Birthright
Do you ever ask God what is on His heart? What would He like to talk about? Opening your ears and heart to Him allows His insight and wisdom to flow into you and possibly through you to others. Are you prepared for Him to awaken you by surprise in the night? Will you turn over and go back to sleep? Or will you say, "Here am I, Lord," like young Samuel? Your willingness and desire to hear from Him open the way for God to do mighty things in your life. Be challenged by Lesson Four to discover your Kingdom Birthright and the adventure of walking in it.
Lesson 5: Built Upon the Rock
Sometimes the effort to hear the Voice of God can feel a bit vague or unstructured. It may be that you are excited about hearing His Voice but uncertain about how to pursue it. Thankfully, there is no lack of direction or instruction available. The Bible is the reference guide to all matters concerning God's ways, including His Voice speaking. Lesson Five lays out a roadmap of scriptures to start you on your listening and communicating journey with God and will teach you to find more roadmap points as you go.
Lesson 6: Ten Practical, Personal Tools
Now it is time to get down to business. It is time to put all you have learned so far into actual practice. Have you experienced inspiration from God since you have been in this class? Have you heard what you are pretty sure was His Voice? Here are precise tools that will help you know you are right on target as you use them. Here is one of the tools: Obey the last thing God said. Have you done that? Make sure to follow through when you have heard from Him. There are nine more highly effective tools in Lesson Six to help you properly conduct your part of the conversation. Hearing His Voice will create a deep hunger in you to listen to it more and more, to have a more intimate relationship with Him.
Lesson 7: Walking in Community
One of the most common ways God speaks is through other Believers. This could be through a preached message, conversation, or prophetic spoken word. Be prepared; He may choose to speak through someone you don't expect or whom you'd rather He wouldn't. Walking the path of humility is required to have your ears tuned to Him rather than personal preference.
Remember how Balaam was so set on his way that God spoke through the donkey? This astonishing intervention saved Balaam's life from the angel with the flaming sword. Lesson seven will warn you of nine common pitfalls or obstacles to hearing God's Voice. One of these is the presence of sin. This was Balaam's problem, along with pride. Carefully review these potential obstacles to ensure you are genuinely open to hearing Him.
Lesson 8: Hearing With Discernment
This critically important lesson will instruct you in nine tests of revelation, which will serve to help you verify you are hearing God's Voice accurately, that it is indeed His Voice you are hearing. These tests are specific and are meant to be applied to what you feel you have heard from God. Using the tests before you act upon what you hear or share with someone will help you to verify accuracy. As you learned earlier, your ability to discern will be enhanced further by using these tests. The adventure of learning to hear God clearly and accurately is a challenging and rewarding foundation stone in your destiny in Christ. This Lesson is full of practical application to encourage you in gaining experience in the spiritual exercise of hearing God speak.
Lesson 9: He Will Guide You
By now, your spirit has increased sensitivity to God and His Voice. Now you will encounter Ten Principles of Divine Guidance which will provide a framework for this increased sensitivity. You will not be surprised to learn that Principle #1 is "The Will of God Is Made Known In the Word of God." The Bible is always the sure foundation in every situation or circumstance, so you would expect it to claim the first position. Looking ahead to #4, you will find "Divine Guidance Comes from Meeting God's Conditions." What are these conditions? How can you know? Plunge into lesson nine to discover the secrets of Divine Guidance you need for your journey.
Lesson 10: Listening, Waiting, and Watching
There will be times that when you least qualify and least expect Him, God shows up! Hearing His Voice is an amazing privilege based on a loving relationship with Him. It is a delight and an honour. Lesson ten will encourage you to make a habit of listening for Him whether you have heard anything lately or not. James shares a precious story of 'waiting' in quiet together on the front porch with his dear wife just three months before she went to Heaven. Selected for you are particular scripture passages that feature waiting on Him and the individuals' unique experiences. Choose a favourite or two to use in encouraging yourself to lift your eyes and ears to Him in quiet stillness.....and wait.
Lesson 11: Properly Responding to God's Voice
Did you know that He expects you to respond when you hear His Voice? How are you supposed to know what to say or do? Lesson eleven is bursting with help to give you the clues and direction you need to steward what God says to you correctly. You will learn from Biblical precedent - always the Bible first! You will be versed in contending, what it is and why you must do it. One powerful section details how to keep moving forward, consistently delighting in fresh encounters with Him. If you do hit a dry patch, there are five ways you can respond properly to get the forward movement revved up again. This lesson is a great confidence builder.
Lesson 12: At the End of the Day
In Dr. Goll's eyes, you are now graduating from your personal school of the Holy Spirit with your successful completion of this class. A grand adventure awaits as you put into practice everything you have learned. This is not an end! You are entering a new day and exciting adventure of fresh applications of hearing God's Voice today. Did anyone say this will always be easy? No, no one said that. James prepares you for rough spots and potential enemy attacks in lesson twelve.
