Now you are excited about Holy Spirit flowing through you and perhaps wondering when or how this will happen. The spiritual gifts manifest in the assembly of Believers. Each member in the group has a specific function. There is safety and accountability here, and it is the welcoming place for the gifts to operate. Ask Holy Spirit to give you a gift. Listen carefully for His Voice prompting you and check your motives to ensure you are in humility. As you genuinely seek Him, He will grant you a gift or more than one to be used in the ministry situation. Build your faith by studying scriptures on spiritual gifts. Lesson three will provide additional guidelines and explanations to help you as you step out into moving in spiritual gifts.

This gift is the God-given ability to recognize the identity of the spirits which are behind a manifestation or activity. This is important in knowing how to pray or what action to take. Discerning is perception and understanding that clarifies a situation by recognizing the spiritual entities involved. The purpose of this gift is to equip you with the ability to test the spirits so that you can know how to deal with them. One means of discernment is to examine the fruit in an individual's life. You may detect a pattern that helps you discern what spirit is at work. Learn more ways to exercise and become sensitive in this powerful spiritual gift.

This tremendously important and sometimes overlooked gift of the Holy Spirit is greatly needed in our day. What is the gift of wisdom? It is receiving a supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit of God's divine purpose and mind! A word of wisdom will help solve the problem at hand. If you already have the facts, the gift of wisdom will show you what to do with those facts to achieve what God is calling you to do. When you receive the gift of wisdom, you suddenly understand the big picture and how all the parts of a situation relate together—study lesson five to learn more applications of this highly impactful gift.

Many times the astonishing spiritual gift is composed of information. In our last lesson, the word of wisdom instructed how to apply information, but the word of knowledge provides information the Believer would not know otherwise. A word of knowledge may be received in a vision or dream, by a quiet impression, by an audible voice, due to a quickening of scripture, by sensing something in one's physical body, or from an angel. This knowledge can be personal in nature, so the Believer exercising the gift must follow the guidelines in lesson 6 and be sensitive to the necessary privacy and confidentiality. 

All Believers have faith, so what is the gift of faith? How is it unique? Ah, the gift of faith is a glorious ability to receive increased faith to believe in miracles! It is different from our personal faith, which brought us to the cross and salvation, and it is also different from faithfulness. The gift of faith goes beyond these faith experiences to take the Believer to a place where they know a particular thing is God's will. Some have described it as a surge of confidence from the Spirit of God that God will act in a certain manner through the Believer. Learn more of this thrilling gift in lesson 7.

When the working of miracles is mentioned, we tend to think of supernatural healings. Still, this gift manifests in other phenomena such as signs and wonders in the sky, weather, or other signs as Holy Spirit gives. It is sometimes described as an intervention in the course of nature as we know it. The working of miracles is astonishing and thrilling, displaying the wonder and power of Almighty God. The gift of faith receives a miracle, and the gift of the working of miracles WORKS a miracle. Jesus' first act of ministry was the working of a miracle when He changed water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana. Learn more in lesson nine about this fascinating gift.

Every Believer is meant to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and every Believer has the option of speaking in tongues which is not a linguistic ability. This gift flows through the Believer's spirit, not through the mind. There is no involvement of the intellect.

The most wonderful thing about praying in tongues is that it is the perfect prayer, not influenced by opinion, experience, mood, or other soulish matter. The scriptures document the use of tongues in several situations. From these, we are provided with a variety of exciting instances in which tongues may be employed. You will enjoy gaining insight into these opportunities, enriching and empowering your prayer life and effectiveness.

The gift of interpretation of tongues is unique among the gifts of the Spirit in that it does not appear in the Bible until after the day of Pentecost. The other primary eight gifts are seen in the Old Testament. Still, the supernatural ability to interpret a spiritual language was given only after every Believer in Christ received the Holy Spirit and the ability to speak in other tongues at Pentecost. 

However, interpretation of tongues takes more forms than just words. It can come in the form of a vision, a newly inspired understanding, or other spiritual revelation. Lesson eleven gives some very special examples of this gift operating in the lives of famous Believers.

To prophesy is to be God's mouthpiece at the moment. It is a unique gift to speak the mind and counsel of God as shared through the Believer by the Holy Spirit. The main purposes of prophecy are: 

a) To build up the Body of Christ

b) To encourage and admonish

c) Comfort, cheer and hearten.

This particular gift is of great interest to many, possibly due to the element of foretelling or stating of an event to come in the future. However, many times prophecy is forthtelling or a stating of an existing situation with great clarity and wisdom to dispel confusion or encourage. As such, prophecy serves to overcome two of Satan's most common attacks: condemnation and discouragement. Lesson twelve will help you understand the operation and effect of this paramount gift more clearly.
